No limit hold 'em poker is a pretty basic game; the fundamentals can be mastered rather quickly. Knowledge of showdowns, betting, hand selection, and the progression of antes and blinds around the table are key to mastering the game. Here, we'll do our best to get you playing the game and having fun, by offering some strategies to improve your game.
Play from a later position. Position is one of the most important strategies in poker; the player who plays last has the advantage because they've already seen their opponents' hands. New players often undervalue position, but it is great when your opponents have stronger hands than you do, or to capture a big pot when you have a strong hand.
Fold lower hands when there's action coming. Being dominant in poker can be costly, and it happens when a hand is favored by 2 to 1 before the flop. Square off against higher pairs- newer players often play too many low hands. They CAN win a showdown, but they often come up short. By folding these hands when there are one or more raises coming up, you will improve your results over time.
The most fun part of poker is bluffing (making your opponent fold a good hand). Bluffing can be very profitable, and what new players don't get is how good it can be if you're called.
Call less and raise more. It can be very tempting to take a peek at the flop, call a small bet, and then call another bet when you make a weak draw, but it rarely pans out. If you raise instead of making the call, you raise your chances of winning and your opponents' chances of folding. Calling means you have to show your hand; it can win you a lot of small pots and it can cover it up when you have a great hand.
If you want to raise your game and win more money, you should seek out players that are of a lower skill level than you. Playing in the first game you come to is basically taking money out of your pocket; take the time to get the lay of the land and look for high pots.
