Poker is one of the most popular games in the casino, and its popularity shows no signs of stopping. The game of poker has become so popular that there are tournaments taking place all over the world. The World Series of Poker is held every year, matching the best players in the world against one another.
A mistake made by a lot of people is the assumption that poker is just one game. The game of poker may have originated from one common ancestor, but these days, there are so many variations. One of the most commonly played poker games is Texas Hold 'Em; there are far less common variants, such as Follow the Queen. There are a lot of poker variants; we'll go over some of the most popular here.
Texas Hold 'Em. As we mentioned, this is one of the poker world's favorite variants of the game. Texas Hold 'Em is the game you see played on TV at the big tournaments. In most cases, Texas Hold 'Em matches are played with either fixed limit, or none at all.
Omaha Hold 'Em. Most Texas Hold 'Em aficionados play this poker variant; the two are quite similar. Just as is the case for Texas Hold 'Em, Omaha has two variations- high and low. There are two main differences between Texas and Omaha Hold 'Em; in the former, the player gets two hole-cards, in Omaha, the player gets four. The other difference is in how the player's hand is comprised. In Omaha Hold 'Em, the player must combine two of their hole-cards and three community cards to make a 5-card hand.
7-card stud. It's a poker variant that's been around for a long time- in fact, it was around before Texas Hold 'Em, and at one time, it was far more popular. 7-card stud is still widely played, both in online and actual casinos. In a 7-card stud game, there are between two and eight players. Each player gets seven cards- three hole-cards and four that come face-up. In five betting rounds, bets are placed before the cards are dealt. The object of 7-card stud is to make a decent hand out of the seven cards you get.
7-card stud was popular a long time before Texas Hold 'Em came along, but it's not the oldest poker variant. 5-card draw is the oldest poker style, but it's still played in many tournaments and casinos. In 5-card draw, the player goes through two betting rounds, and ultimately gets five cards which they keep hidden. If the player doesn't like what they get, they can return any or all of their cards and get new ones. The object of the game is to make the best hand possible out of the five cards dealt.
